The church was founded in 1875 by the first Armenians to arrive in the city from Moush, in 1870. It was built with the personal work of the faithful and completed in August 1886. A school was also built in an adjacent area. It is worth noting that the Church of Sourp Garabed is the first Christian temple built in the city.
