In 1888, upon the persistent efforts of Armenian locals, an area was purchased and a permission granted, in order to erect a church, in the center of what was then Ottoman Thessaloniki. The architect of the church is the famous Italian Vitalian Pozelli, known for many other notable monuments of the city. The consecration of the church took place on 6 November 1903.
